BAP Acoustics implemented a unique acoustic rail roughness monitoring service for a local light-rail operator. The monitoring procedure combined CAT (Corrugation Analysis Trolley) measurements with simultaneously measured GPS and noise data collected at four wheels of a test car. Specialty software, RailInspector, developed by M+P Consultants of the Netherlands, was used to map roughness profiles across the entire network for both left and right rails.
The acoustic rail roughness monitoring procedure was developed in the European Union. The application of this monitoring protocol on the elevated light-rail system in Metro Vancouver is the first of its kind in North America.
