Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Vancouver, BC

Emily Carr Auditorium

The new Emily Carr University of Art + Design on Great Northern Way in Vancouver’s east side accommodates nearly 1800 students in 290,000 sq ft of educational space. The project had as estimated construction cost of $122 million.

BAP Acoustics was engaged by constructor EllisDon to model the output of the speech reinforcement and media playback systems installed in several key learning spaces in the building. Specialized Enhanced Acoustic Simulator for Engineers (EASE) software was used to map the sound level and speech intelligibility coverage of the audio systems throughout the audience areas.

The BAP team was also engaged to undertake acoustic compliance tests in the newly constructed building. The tests included airborne sound transmission (STC) tests, background noise level measurements and reverberation time measurements throughout the building.
